Christmas Attractions to See for OFWs and Family

It is a Filipino tradition that families spend their time together during the Christmas. So wherever they are, relatives working abroad go home to be with their family. If you’ve been away for so long you might be more familiar with your host country than our Philippines. Below are list of places you can visit during the holiday season.

Enchanted Kingdom

This theme park is located in Santa Rosa City, Laguna. It is a very good theme park perhaps comparable to theme park standards abroad. I especially like the rides: Wide River, Space Shuttle, and Rialto (the 4D Cinema). Their giant ferris wheel, Wheel of Fate, is also nice.

Star City

An amusement center in Pasay City. You can find many good rides here that the children will definitely enjoy. My favorite here are the horror themed rides.

Giant Lantern Festival

This is an annual Christmas Lantern Festival in San Fernando Pampanga. This year the festival will be held on December 18, 2010 at the Robinsons Starmills Mall. We all know that the Philippines makes the best Christmas Lantern’s in the world and the top lantern makers will be competing with each other. Expect to see colorful lanterns as big as 20 feet high and 20 feet wide. Definitely one of the must see events this Christmas.

Policarpio Street in Mandaluyong

During Christmas time the whole street transforms into a wonderland of lights. Every house is elaborately decorated. This is a nice place to visit and photograph.

Automated Christmas Dolls

This show was traditionally held in Cubao but has since move to Greenhills Shopping Center when the COD Department Store closed. The show features 30 animated figures that depict Christmas stories.

In recent years Pasig City Hall has started running a similar show.

These are the places and events we know at the moment. We know that more will be advertised as we begin to enter the holiday season.

No Duties and Taxes on One Electronic Item for Christmas

The Bureau of Customs will not charge duties for one electronic item that OFWs will bring in the country in the spirit of Christmas.

According to Custom Commissioner Lito Alvarez he has told his collectors, examiners, and appraisers to be more considerate to our Balikbayans and vacationing Overseas Filipino Workers.

Normally there is an Ad Valorem tax imposed on electronic items that costs more than Php 10,000.

This is quite a nice Christmas present coming from the Bureau of Customs.

But sirs and madams, can we increase the number of tax free items to five?

Anyway, an early Merry Christmas from us. *Smiles*

Online Gift Shops for OFWs

For Overseas Filipino Workers it is very important to be with the family during Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But you maybe in a situation that you are unable to go home. Perhaps you are out of vacation leave or you are required to stay because of the present demands of work.

In cases like this you are there is not much to do but atleast send them gifts. You could ask a Kababayan to carry you gifts for you when they go home. Or you can have them shipped. But the problem with shipping is that the carriers maybe too busy, especially since it’s already November. Your package may not arrive until after the holidays.

You could try the online gift stores:

PHGifts.com

PhilRegalo.com

MyRegalo.com

GiftsnIdeas.com

RegaloManila.com

These are but some of the online stores. They will deliver straight to your relatives’ home since most of these stores are based in the Philippines.

These stores accepts all major credit cards, paypal, western union, bank payment, etc.

They can be much more expensive than buying locally. But hey, it’s better than nothing when you are running out of options.

How to Beat Homesickness

ofw homesick I once asked a friend if he ever cry when he is homesick. He has been working abroad ever since we graduated from college.

He said that during the first few years he not only cried – he wailed. He cried out really loud.

Homesickness is every OFW’s enemy.

So how can you beat homesickness?

My suggestion would be to stay in touch with your love ones. If possible keep in contact with them everyday.

This is easier these days thanks to the Internet. It is best if you can talk to them via video conference. If not a audio conference or chat will be just as good.

If you are able to talk to them most of the week it would feel like you never went away at all. It would like they are just in another room.

And then when you are at work, keep yourself busy with work. Keep yourself occupied so that the feeling would go away. Homesickness strikes you the strongest when you are idle.

But I think the most effective way is, when you are missing home, remind yourself your purpose why you had to work abroad in the first place. It’s for your family, for your love ones.

That is what I do whenever I am away.

Jobs Even for Older People

When you are a new graduate there are many opportunities available. But once you reached the aged of 30 and upwards, you will notice that the opportunities become fewer.

Because at these age most job offers are supervisory or managerial. What if you are happier being a simple worker?

Actually, if you are open to working abroad, there are a lot of job opportunities for workers within these age group.

If you visit our jobs database at http://jobsopen.rrjm.com. You will find that we’ve looked for workers even up to the age of 55.
